Lewis Hurst Allert was born Oct. 29, 1943, to John Allert and Francis Hurst. He was the younger of two boys.

Lew spent his younger years in the Spokane, Wash., area. After high school, Lew fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Marine. After the Marine Corps, Lew worked for Armour Meat Company in the San Francisco Bay area.

In 1976, he met Carla Weber, and in 1980, they married. They transferred to Houston, Texas, where he left Armour Meats and formed his own real estate company, Ash Properties. They'd had enough of city life and decided to move back home to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1988. After moving home, Lew and Carla got involved with children's charities. They were very active with Kids Helping Kids Mend Broken Hearts, Vanessa Behan, Canopy Village and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Life then led Lew to help veterans, and that became his mission. Through different veteran organizations, Lew got involved with Toys for Tots and that became his main focal point.

In Lew's final years, he built a legacy in his devotion to Toys for Tots. His 1963 yellow Chevy truck and trailer will live on in the North Idaho community for the future to come.

On Dec. 2, 2024, Lew passed away with Carla by his side. He leaves behind one brother, Clinton "Skip" Allert (Margie), and nephews Marc and Steve. He was predeceased by his mother, father and daughter Shelley Allert.

Carla would like to ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the North Idaho Toys for Tots, P.O. Box 1872, Hayden, ID 83835.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the American Legion, Post 143, 1138 E. Poleline Ave., Post Falls, ID 83854.
